President Bola Tinubu in a bold move yesterday restricted ministers, ministers of state, and heads of agencies of the Federal Government to a maximum of three vehicles in their official convoys, saying no additional vehicles would be assigned to them for movement.
This directive, announced in a statement by the special adviser to the president on information and strategy, Bayo Ononuga, aims to curb unnecessary expenses and promote fiscal responsibility within the government.
The President’s austerity measures began in January when he reduced his entourage on foreign trips from 50 to 20 officials and 25 for local trips. The Vice President’s entourage was also reduced to five officials on foreign trips and 15 for local trips.
Under the new directive, Ministers, Ministers of State and heads of agencies will be allowed a maximum of five security personnel, comprising four police officers and one DSS officer. The National Security Adviser has been tasked with identifying suitable reductions in vehicle and security personnel deployment for military, paramilitary, and security agencies. This move is part of President Tinubu’s broader effort to slash government expenditure.
