The federal government has directed vice-chancellors to reopen universities and commence lectures.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been on strike since February 14 over the failure of the union and the government to agree on demands bordering on funding universities and lecturers’ salaries and allowances.
According to the Punch, the government through the National Universities Commission asked vice-chancellors to re-open schools and allow students resume lectures.
The newspaper said this was disclosed in a letter signed by the director, finance and accounts of the NUC, Sam Onazi, on behalf of the executive secretary of the commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed.
The letter was reportedly addressed to all vice-chancellors; pro-chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities.
“Ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures; Restore the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses,” the letter reportedly reads.
Last Wednesday, the national industrial court asked ASUU to call off the strike.
But the union said it would appeal against the judgment.
