The All Progressives Congress (APC) says it is concerned about the latest invitation of its chieftain, Femi Fani-Kayode, by the police, a few days before the general election.
Bayo Onanuga, the director of media and publicity for the APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.
Mr Onanuga urged the police to allow the State Security Service’s investigation to go its full course to avoid opening themselves to suspicions that they were implementing an agenda scripted by the opposition.
“We were surprised that the police have also jumped into the same matter,” Mr Onanuga said. “They should allow the DSS to complete its investigation.”
On Monday, Mr Fani-Kayode, the director of special projects and new media for the campaign council, was invited by the SSS for questioning that lasted five hours.
The SSS grilled the former Minister of Aviation under former President Olusegun Obasanjo following his tweet alleging that Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), had a meeting with some military generals to possibly plot a coup.
“While we are not questioning the authority of the police to invite our official, we want the police to be mindful that the truth they seek to find is already being pursued by the DSS,” Mr Onanuga reiterated.
He said the police invitation came as a surprise, as it came when Mr Fani-Kayode was needed for the election as the council`s director of new media.
Mr Onanuga said the SSS, at the meeting, made it clear to Mr Fani-Kayode that the basis of his tweet, a newspaper report, was not correct.
He said the police should, therefore, allow the SSS to complete its investigation.
He added that Mr Fani-Kayode would have another round of grilling by the SSS today (Wednesday).
