The civil society group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), on Tuesday, 05 June charged the Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, to cut the bogus National Assembly budget of N344.85 billion as a sacrifice to enable the Federal Government to meet the demands of organized labour.
SERAP says the chairman and deputy chairman of the National Assembly can prove genuineness of interventions by reviewing the 2024 National Assembly budget. The group stated, “We urge the Senate President, Mr. Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Reps, Mr Abbas, to urgently cut the National Assembly budget of N344.85 billion, to allow the Tinubu administration to meet the demands of NLC on minimum wage for Nigerian workers.”
SERAP urged them “to request President Bola Tinubu to present a fresh supplementary appropriation bill, which reflects the reduced National Assembly budget for the approval of the National Assembly.”
The organisation also urged the National Assembly “to promptly publish details of the National Assembly budget of N344.85 billion, including the proposed spending details of the N3 billion for the Senate Car Park and N3 billion budgeted for the House of Representatives Car Park.”
