In news reports the 7-day warning strike by the Senior Staff Association of Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational Associated Institutions (NASU) has brought several academic activities across universities in the country to a halt. Notably, both unions held an emergency congress at the University of Nigeria in Nsukka (UNN), Enugu State and it was gathered that the chairman of SSANU-UNN, Dr. Linus Akata, in the company of his NASU-UNN counterpart, Ekene Amu, said the emergency congress was meant to tell members that the strike would be total and comprehensive in UNN, in compliance with the directive of the national leadership. Several students at the university bemoaned the debilitating impact of the strike on their studies and learning opportunities.
Academic workers at such institutions as the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, and the Federal University of Technology in Akure (FUTA), Ondo State have also complied with the strike. Others like the NASU branch at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) have appealed to the public to understand their plight and the decision to proceed on strike. The SSANU branch at the Federal University in Lafia (FULafia), Nasarawa State, also joined in while the SSANU chairman at the Federal University of Technology in Owerri (FUTO), Uchenna Nwokeji, also said the strike was total at the establishment.
