Tensions between the Edo State Government and the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have escalated over growing concerns about insecurity in the state. This marks the second time in a week that both parties have clashed publicly, fueling political friction ahead of the upcoming elections.
The PDP has accused the ruling government, led by Governor Godwin Obaseki, of failing to address the rising cases of kidnappings, armed robberies, and violent attacks plaguing various parts of Edo State. According to the opposition party, the administration has demonstrated incompetence in handling the security crisis, leaving residents vulnerable and businesses threatened.
“The government has failed in its primary duty of protecting lives and property,” said Chief Dan Orbih, a senior PDP leader. “Every day, we hear stories of people being abducted or attacked by criminals, and yet, the state government remains inactive. It is unacceptable.”
In response, the Edo State Government dismissed the allegations, accusing the PDP of using insecurity as a political tool to discredit the administration. The state’s Commissioner for Information, Chris Nehikhare, asserted that Governor Obaseki’s government has invested significantly in security infrastructure, including equipping law enforcement agencies and deploying local vigilante groups to tackle crime.
“The PDP’s claims are nothing but political propaganda,” Nehikhare said. “We have implemented robust security measures, including the establishment of a security surveillance system and the reinforcement of community policing. Crime is a national issue, and Edo is not isolated from the challenges facing the country.”
The ongoing dispute has drawn reactions from residents and civil society organizations, some of whom agree that insecurity has worsened while others commend the government’s efforts in tackling the issue. Security analysts have suggested that political divisions could further complicate the situation, urging both parties to collaborate on finding lasting solutions instead of trading blame.
As Edo State prepares for elections later this year, the issue of security is expected to remain a key topic of debate among political parties. The citizens, meanwhile, await concrete solutions that will ensure their safety and restore confidence in the state’s governance.
