The Enugu Council has moved swiftly to refute alarming reports circulating on social media about mass killings and arson within the community. In a public statement, the Council Chairman dismissed the claims as false, urging residents to remain calm and avoid the spread of misinformation.
Speaking at a press briefing, the Council Chairman emphasized that there had been no verified incidents of large-scale violence or coordinated attacks in the area. He criticized the spread of unverified news, warning that such reports could incite unnecessary panic and disrupt public order.
“These claims are entirely baseless and aimed at creating fear among our people. Security agencies and local authorities have assessed the situation, and there is no evidence to support these allegations,” the Chairman stated.
He assured residents that the local government, in collaboration with security operatives, remains committed to maintaining peace and swiftly addressing any security threats that may arise.
In response to the rumors, local law enforcement agencies and the Enugu State Police Command also confirmed that no recent mass killings or acts of arson had taken place. The Commissioner of Police reiterated that while security challenges exist in various parts of the state, exaggerated and false reports only hinder efforts to maintain order.
“We urge residents to verify information before sharing it. Spreading unconfirmed news can cause unnecessary fear and tension. Our officers are on the ground, and we are closely monitoring any potential threats to ensure the safety of all citizens,” he said.
The Enugu Council has encouraged residents to obtain their news from credible sources such as government agencies, security forces, and verified media outlets. The Chairman also warned against individuals using social media to spread falsehoods, noting that authorities may take legal action against those responsible for fabricating such reports.
“We live in an era of rapid digital communication, but this also comes with the responsibility to ensure that the information we share is factual. Sensationalism and false news do not help our community,” he added.
As part of efforts to strengthen security in the region, the Council has pledged to improve collaboration with law enforcement agencies and community leaders. Plans are also underway to engage in more proactive communication strategies to prevent the spread of misinformation in the future.
For now, authorities continue to reassure residents that Enugu remains stable and that any emerging security concerns will be addressed transparently and effectively. The call for unity, vigilance, and responsible information sharing remains key to maintaining peace and order in the region.
