In a daring attack, unidentified gunmen have abducted a Defence Headquarters (DHQ) official along with two other individuals in Abuja, demanding a ransom of N100 million for their release. The incident, which occurred late Friday night, has heightened concerns over the growing wave of insecurity in the nation’s capital.
How the Abduction Happened
According to eyewitness reports, the victims were ambushed while travelling along a secluded route in the Bwari area of Abuja. The attackers, suspected to be heavily armed criminal elements, intercepted their vehicle and whisked them away to an undisclosed location.
Security sources confirmed that one of the victims is a senior official of the Defence Headquarters, though authorities have not disclosed their identity for security reasons. The other two victims, believed to be private citizens, were reportedly taken alongside the official.
“The gunmen blocked the road, fired warning shots, and ordered them out of the vehicle. They then took them away, leaving their car abandoned by the roadside,” a local resident told TheLink News.
Gunmen Demand N100 Million Ransom
Hours after the abduction, the kidnappers reportedly contacted the families of the victims, demanding a ransom of N100 million for their safe return. Sources indicate that negotiations may be ongoing, though security agencies have not officially confirmed this.
A relative of one of the victims, speaking anonymously, expressed fear over their loved one’s safety. “They are asking for an amount we cannot afford. We are pleading with the authorities to intervene before anything terrible happens,” he said.
Security Agencies on High Alert
The Nigerian military and other security operatives have launched a manhunt for the abductors, with special intelligence and tactical teams reportedly deployed to track their movements. Defence Headquarters spokesperson, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, assured the public that efforts are being made to rescue the victims.
“We are fully aware of the incident and have mobilized our forces to ensure their safe return. We urge the public to remain calm as we intensify efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice,” he stated.
Growing Insecurity in Abuja
This latest abduction is part of a disturbing trend of rising kidnappings in Abuja and surrounding areas. Despite increased security measures, criminal gangs continue to operate with impunity, targeting both high-profile individuals and ordinary citizens.
Security analysts have warned that the recent spike in kidnappings could be linked to organized crime networks seeking to exploit ransom payments. Some have also criticized the government’s approach to tackling insecurity, calling for a more robust strategy to curb the growing menace.
What’s Next?
With the victims still in captivity, pressure is mounting on security agencies to secure their release without further delay. Meanwhile, the families of the abducted individuals remain on edge, hoping for a swift resolution to the crisis.
As Nigerians grapple with the reality of increasing insecurity, many are calling on the federal government to prioritize intelligence gathering and community-based policing to curb the wave of kidnappings.
