The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) has implemented proactive measures to protect Nigeria from the newly identified COVID-19 variant, XEC.
Although no cases of the variant have been reported in the country, the agency has heightened its efforts to prevent its entry and ensure public safety.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by NBMA’s Head of Information and Public Relations, Gloria Ogbaki, the agency announced the intensification of surveillance at borders, airports, and other points of entry.
The NBMA emphasized its commitment to bolstering vaccination programs and public health strategies to mitigate any potential threats posed by the variant.
The agency encouraged Nigerians to remain vigilant by relying on verified health information, adhering to preventive measures such as mask-wearing and hand hygiene, and ensuring that their vaccinations and booster doses are up to date.
It also advised that anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, or loss of taste and smell should seek immediate medical attention.
Furthermore, the public was urged to cooperate with health authorities by promptly reporting suspected cases and adhering to quarantine or isolation guidelines when necessary.
The NBMA assured Nigerians of its dedication to safeguarding public health and pledged to provide timely updates as the situation develops.
