President Bola Tinubu has addressed the uproar and multiple memes over his fall during Nigeria’s Democracy Day commemoration at the Eagle Square in the nation’s capital, Abuja on Wednesday, 12 June 2024.
The president tripped as he climbed into a military truck to review the day’s parade. An incident that elicited countless reactions from supporters and opposition in the polity, especially on social media.
However, embracing the occasion’s cultural significance, Tinubu playfully suggested that onlookers during the moment might have mistaken his misstep for the popular “buga” dance move or a traditional Yoruba display.
At the June 12 Democracy Day dinner at the Presidential Villa, President Tinubu said, “Early this (yesterday) morning, I had a swagger and it’s on the social media. They’re confused as to whether I was doing ‘buga’ (a type of dance) or ‘babaringa’ (folding the agbada).
But it is the day to celebrate democracy while doing dobale (prostration) for the day. I’m a traditionally Yoruba boy; I did my dobale.”
