The calm of Rivers State is once again disturbed after the House of Assembly accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara of obstructing a Supreme Court judgment. This new development deepens the already existing power tussle between the legislature and executive arms in the oil-rich state, which continues to raise concern over governance and political order in the region.
State Assembly’s Grievances Against the Governor
During an all-staff meeting, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly expressed their disappointment stating that the Fubara administration is willfully sitting on a Supreme Court ruling that is important to the state’s political and administrative equilibrium. Even if the particulars of the ruling are contentious, the lawmakers are adamant the governor’s noncompliance has further exacerbated the still existing hardships of government officials.
Always remember, ‘the law is the law.’ This is a paraphrased statement from a senior legislator that wished to remain anonymous. He expressed concern that should the governor frustrate the implementation of the Supreme Court decision, it will establish an alarming norm that governance in Rivers State will be carried out.
Fubara Responds
The statements were dismissed by Governor Fubara who, himself, believed the claims were of a political agenda relating to a rival faction of the House of Assembly that Fubara claims does not serve the interests of the people. His press team put out a statement claiming that all legal procedures needed to be adhered to and executed before any actions could be taken. They claimed that ‘all allegations are devoid of any intent to obstruct any Supreme Court judgement’. The statement went on, ‘the Rivers State Government will always act in the best interests of it citizens within the framework of the law’
Deepening Political Tensions
The political tensions in Rivers State can be traced back to a feud between the present governor and the lawmakers aligned with Nyesom Wike, Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who was Wike’s predecessor. The tensions reached their peak when a faction of the House attempted to vote the Governor out leading to mass protests that required the involvement of national politicians to quell.
As per political experts, the current deadlock represents yet another phase in the fight for dominance over the political control of Rivers State. A political science lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, Dr. Charles Okorie remarked, “This is more than a legal issue. It is a political game of moves and check. With 2027 elections on the corner, the moves by the governor and the Assembly members are being projected for long term walking.”
Future Outlook
The flare up of conflict in Rivers State has left many people questioning the capabilities of the government. At this moment, citizens fear that the conflict between the executive and legislative branches will halt development initiatives and worsen the already poor economic situation.
Legal practitioners and NGOs have suggested that both parties sit together in order to make sure that there are no interruptions in governance. Observers of the political scene are also watching how the country’s leaders, particularly President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will act to avert this issue from growing worse.
At this moment, the people in Rivers State are waiting patiently for how the conflict over power plays out and if political control will be lethargic to the functioning of governance.
